Youth Services - About Us

What we're about!

Youth Work

Cockburn Youth Services is committed to ensuring that the voice of all young people in Cockburn is heard.  It is essential that any decisions that are made in Cockburn include the needs and opinions of young people.

The City provides a range of programs for both individuals and groups to address the needs of young people in Cockburn.  We do this by speaking regularly to young people and the community, facilitating the Youth Advisory Council and by working closely with other agencies.

Being a mobile service, the youth workers are able to meet with young people in any location that is convenient and safe. Some of the things the service supports young people with include family conflict, difficulties at school, relationships, feeling down, problems with alcohol and other drugs, accommodation, education, training and employment, income support or legal issues.

The City receives funding from the Department of Child Protection and the Department of Corrective Service to employ two full time youth workers and one part-time youth worker to support young people in Cockburn aged 10 - 18 years and their families.

The Service provides individual case management, information, advocacy and support as well as group programmes for young people up to the age of 24.

Group programmes are developed in response to community needs and can include young parents groups, young men's and young women's groups, health and relationships workshops, independent living skills and other programs to enhance youth participation and engagement.

Youth Development - Activities & Programs

The City provides a broad range of activities and programs which are accessible to all young people living in the City aged 10 to 24 years of age.

The activities and programs are a mix of centre based activities and community wide activities and include holiday programs, art workshops, recreational based programs (such as skate, fishing, streetball, fitness groups, dance, jewellery workshops) camps, personal development workshops, leadership development and youth participation strategies (Youth Advisory Council, YAC Events committee) and education and training.

Cockburn Youth Services operates from the Cockburn Youth Centre in Success.

The Centre is the hub for all youth service related activity and collocates a number of other services Youth Reach South a Health Department of WA service which provides specialist mental health services to young people.

Other agencies which operate a service from the Centre are St John of God Counselling, Headspace Fremantle and Challenger TAFE. The Centre provides a focal point for services targeted at young people living in Cockburn.
