What are the differences between "A Notary Public" and a "Justice of the Peace"

A Notary Public not only takes oaths, signs and witnesses documents for use within Australia, but also performs similar functions in respect of international documents.

Justices of the Peace (JPs) Justices of the peace are appointed by the Governor of Western Australia who authorises them to carry out a wide range of official administrative and judicial duties in the community. As well as presiding in the Magistrates Court, justices of the peace are regularly called upon by the WA Police to sign search warrants and authorise the issuing of summonses. The administrative tasks include witnessing affidavits and documents such as wills and statutory declarations. They can only act in the Western Australian jurisdiction, where they can sign interstate and overseas documents unless it is specifically stipulated that they cannot do so.

Are you a (JP) Justice of the Peace? Council is always on the lookout for additional voluntary JP's.  If you wish to offer your services, please call Colleen Miller on 9411 3444.
