About the event
Join us for a series of Six Seasons walks across the Perth metropolitan area to explore traditional ecological knowledge and discover how the Noongar people utilised native plants and animals. Perth NRM, in collaboration with the City of Kalamunda, City of Cockburn, City of Stirling, City of Bayswater, City of Melville, and the Shire of Mundaring, will host these walks at popular parks and reserves. Participants will gain insight into the Noongar seasonal cycle of travel and resource collection, spanning from the hills to the coast.
Each walk will be led by an Elder or Traditional Knowledge holder, offering a unique opportunity to experience the Noongar seasons and learn about their culture and language. You'll gain a deeper appreciation of our bushland and understand how the Noongar people managed their extensive resources. Discover the uses of different blossoms for cordials, the role of banksia cones as fire sticks, and the medicinal properties of various plants.
Every walk is unique, influenced by weather, flora, fauna, and participant questions. We invite you to join us for a cuppa and a yarn afterwards to share your thoughts and experiences. This is a chance to learn something new and enhance your appreciation of Noongar culture and our incredible natural surroundings.
In our upcoming community walk, we will be in the Birak season. The Six Seasons were crucial to the Noongar people's yearly cycle of travel and resource collection, and this walk will deepen your understanding of their connection to Country. The event will include a Welcome to Country and insights from Reverend Mitchell Garlett about the significance of the Cockburn coast.
Please arrive early to allow time for parking and registration.
Please note that each event is fluid and may vary slightly based on weather, flora, fauna, and participant questions. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.
