Graffiti art at South Fremantle Power Station

Question: We’d love to know a bit of background from the council – if there’s a plan in place to clean it, or if it will be left in place.

Answer: The City has always recognised the importance and value of the graffiti within and around the Power Station site, including the potential for an arts/culture precinct, and we would support the retention of the most recent artwork. However, the site is owned by Synergy and they will be responsible for any decisions around what happens to the graffiti. Please direct any queries to Synergy.
 
The City has a strong interest in the power station as an iconic landmark on our coastline. The City has requested that Development WA and Synergy investigate an alternative adaptive reuse philosophy that respects its current character as an abandoned ruin much-loved by the community.  This approach would involve minimal intervention to the place, including stabilisation of the structure and maintaining key sections, without the burden of cost that full restoration would demand.  This would provide for the staging of the restoration to help provide some funding opportunities for the site without preventing a further transition to full restoration in the future should it be desired/achievable.  The City continues to collaborate with Development WA in this regard and is constantly seeking funding to support the sites aspirations to help unlock the sites significant potential.
