Future of former South Lake Leisure Centre site

The City of Cockburn's response to Cockburn Gazette on 22.1.21 about the future of the former South Lake Leisure Centre site -

Question: Can you confirm the site was handed to the Department of Education in 2017?
Answer: The site was formally handed over in 2017, the City offered to demolish the building at this time, however this was rejected by the Department of Education.

Question: Whose responsibility is maintenance of the verge and carpark? If it is the City’s, how often is it maintained?
Answer: The City is responsible for verge maintenance along the Lakelands Reserve and the Lakelands Hockey and Sporting Facility. The Education Department is responsible for the former South Lake Leisure Centre (SLLC) site.

Question: Has CoSafe dealt with reports of anti-social behaviour at the old leisure centre? How often have they been called out to the site since its closure?
Answer: CoSafe has recently dealt with four incidents at the site, three relating to anti-social behaviour and one drunken behaviour.

Question: Given there appears to have been little work done since its closure, does the City have any opinion on what they ultimately would like to see done with the site long-term? 
Answer: The City would like to see the Education Department demolish the building and turn the space into a useable area for the benefit of the community and students alike.

Question: Anything else you would like to add?
Answer: The City has spent significant funds on the new hockey facility development which is located next to the former SLLC. This development has significantly improved the anti-social behaviour issues which were being experienced within the area, however the remaining SLLC building has continued to present a number of issues (break ins, smashed windows, anti-social behaviour) and is in a state of disrepair. The City would welcome the Education Department demolishing the former leisure centre and repurposing the space as part of the broader vision to revitalise the area.
