Treeby mobile phone coverage

The City of Cockburn's response to 7News Perth on 17 March 2022 about Treeby mobile phone coverage

Question: In the City’s opinion – who should be responsible for fixing the issue of poor reception in the area?
Answer:
The City understands the frustration of some Treeby residents who are experiencing poor mobile phone coverage and is pleased advocacy by the City and the community has finally achieved an outcome for these critical locations.

While the responsibility for telecommunications lay exclusively with the Commonwealth Government and the private telecommunication service providers, the City has been strongly advocating for several years with telecommunication providers and Commonwealth Government Ministers and their agencies to improve mobile phone coverage in black spot areas throughout the City.

This week (Tuesday 15 March), Telstra provided the City with preliminary plans for a new tower in Cockburn Central (East).

Telstra has told the City it will improve mobile phone coverage for residents and businesses in Treeby, Jandakot and Cockburn Central.

The City will assess the preliminary plans for the proposed tower, after which Telstra will apply for a Development Approval and sign a lease with the City.

The City is confident Telstra will deliver the new tower in 2023.

A definitive date will be known once the development approval and lease are finalised.

The proposed location will have minimal visual impact as it will be placed in a commercial/industrial area.
