The City of Cockburn's response to Nine News Perth about a derelict property in Coogee
Question: I am aware there is a 90 day “building to be removed notice” on the door. Is this the first time this has been issued to the owners?
Answer: On 6 February 2023, the City issued a take down and remove notice in accordance with the provisions of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911.
Question: If the owners don’t adhere to the notice, what will happen next?
Answer: The City remains hopeful the owner(s) will make contact with the City and that the matter can be resolved with their cooperation.
Question: How long has the Council been working on this property and it’s removal? And why has it taken 15 years as the local residents say?
Answer: City records indicate complaints were received in September 2017 regarding potential trespass onto the property. Since this time the City has made numerous attempts to contact the owner to resolve the issues raised. In 2020 the City declared the property unfit for human habitation in accordance with the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911. A further notice was issued in February 2023.
Question: Will the Council remove the building if the owners don’t? Who will foot that bill?
Answer: The City will consider all options prior to commencing removal.
