Sister city delegation to Split deferred

The City of Cockburn's response to Seven West Media about Council's deferral of a sister city delegation to Split, Croatia, 15.2.24

Statement:

Cockburn Council has listened to its community.

While cost of living pressures are affecting all communities, CounciI endorsed the deferral of the delegation, for determination at a later date.

The delegation was a proposal only and came before Council for a decision following a recommendation from the City’s Sister City Reference Group, comprised of Elected Members, to investigate its viability.

The timing of the delegation was in response to an open invitation from the Mayor of the City of Split Ivica Puljak, and to coincide with performances of City of Cockburn residents in Split as part of the Zagreb Croatian Folkloric Group’s travel to the city.

It was also a reciprocation of a visit to Cockburn by City of Split representatives in October 2023 as part of our 25-year sister city alliance.

This relationship recognises historic links between Croatia and Cockburn when many Croatians settled in the area.

As a Council, we continue to focus on what we have always done best, and that is to deliver on the community’s priorities of providing low rates, amazing facilities and a huge range of free or low-cost services.
