Closure of Coogee Beach SLSC public toilets due to damage, vandalism

The City's response to 6PR about the temporary closure of Coogee Beach SLSC public toilets due to damage and vandalism, 21.11.24

The City of Cockburn has been forced to temporarily reduce the opening hours of the public toilets at its Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club facility due to a serious and ongoing spate of vandalism and damage.

Over the past six weeks there have been 21 separate incidents of damage and vandalism, including the most recent incident last night which occurred before the toilet was closed at 6pm.

Damage has included broken door hardware, toilet rolls and sanitisers being ripped off walls, fires being lit, toilets being blocked with toilet paper, graffiti damage and faeces being left on the floors and in the showers.

The City has spent about $25,000 to repair the damage at the facility resulting in periods of closure for safety and works to be completed.

The intent is to return to the normal closing time of 10pm from 1 December, however if vandalism and damage continues opening hours will be revised. The nearest public toilets are 500m north at Coogee Beach Reserve, on Powell Road.

Public safety is the City’s priority and although this area and facility is regularly patrolled by our CoSafe team, these patrols have been increased in recent weeks along with dedicated CCTV coverage and ongoing reports to WA Police.

We encourage people to contact WA Police if they see or know of suspicious or criminal damage occurring in the community by calling 131 444.
