We encourage people of all ages, genders, abilities, and cultural backgrounds to apply. Our focus is on selecting the best candidates for our advertised roles, ensuring our processes allow you to present the best version of yourself.

If you require reasonable adjustments to the application process, please contact the person listed in the job advertisement. We strive to provide a fair and accessible application experience for all.

Preparing your application

Before applying, make sure you can provide:

  • Proof of your right to work in Australia
  • Relevant qualifications, licences, and/or tickets as specified in the position description
  • Necessary clearances, like National Police Clearance, if required by the role
  • Be willing to undertake a pre-employment medical assessment and drug and alcohol screening, demonstrating your fitness for work.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online, with alternative submission methods available upon prior agreement.
Your application should include:

  • Personal details: Your contact information
  • Work history: A summary of past roles, with a high-level overview of duties if applicable
  • Qualifications: Proof of qualifications as per the job description
  • Licences/certificates: Evidence of any required licences or certificates
  • Referees: At least two referees to comment on your work performance
  • Response to selection criteria (if required): Include this only if the job advertisement specifically requests it.

Responding to selection criteria

For positions with selection criteria, structure your response using the STAR method:

  • Situation: Where and when you faced the situation
  • Task: The challenge or problem you needed to address
  • Action: Your approach and the actions you took
  • Result: The outcomes you achieved, quantifying where possible.

Responding to screening questions

These must be addressed for your application to be considered valid.

Selection process

The selection process for externally advertised roles:
Step 1: Application review
We assess all applications against the essential criteria in the position description to create a shortlist.
Step 2: Interview process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews, which could be over the phone, via video, or in person.

To prepare:

  • Arrive early for the interview to get into the right headspace
  • Research about the City as we might ask what you know about us
  • Prepare examples demonstrating your suitability for the role, ideally using the STAR format.
Step 3: Reference checks
We gather insights into your professional abilities and character, preferably including a referee from your current employer.
Step 4: Pre-employment screening
This may involve medical assessments, drug and alcohol screening, police clearance, psychometric testing, qualification verification, and skill assessments.
Step 5: Job offer
Successful candidates will receive a formal offer outlining the specifics of the role, including position details, start date, and location.
Step 6: Onboarding
New employees undergo an onboarding process to integrate into the organisation and their new role.
