Youth Justice Mentoring is a program funded by the State Government to provide personalised and one-on-one support to
young people aged 10 to 17 who have become involved with the justice system and living in the south-west metropolitan corridor.
All program participants have been referred by the
Department of Youth Justice to improve an individual’s life and development through a mentoring framework.
Mentors focus on supporting young people with life skills, health and wellbeing, and personal development, including:
- Effective communication
- Conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
- Accessing community sport, health and wellness programs
- Budgeting
- Learning how to drive
- Navigating government departments and attending appointments
- Problem-solving and decision-making
Culturally appropriate support
Youth Justice Mentors actively work to support and empower young people in the program. Staff continually develop their cultural competence in order to provide a culturally secure and safe service for young people from Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds
The mentor works closely with an Aboriginal Cultural Advisor to ensure the support is culturally appropriate and that young people experience their culture being acknowledged and celebrated.
