Mice and Rats

It is common to see mice or rats on your property or hear them in your roof during colder months as they seek shelter in buildings and residential areas. Find out how you can deter rodents or bait them safely and effectively. 

Discourage rats and mice

To discourage rodents from your property: 

• Stack firewood uniformly; keep it away from shed sides and fences, and off the ground 

• Reduce garden waste and unused materials in sheds and yards 

• Trim shrubs, hedges, and undergrowth; remove dead branches from trees, especially palms 

• Harvest fruits and nuts as soon as they are ripe; keep trees and vines clear 

• Block holes and access points in buildings that could provide shelter 

• Store pet food in sealed containers; clean pet dishes and bird cages regularly 

• Seal compost containers and rubbish bins. 

Safe and effective rodent baits

If rodents are becoming a problem, consider using baits.  

Follow these guidelines: 

• Use bird-friendly rodent baits that do not contain SGARs (second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides). Visit Birdlife Australia for more information  

• Place baits in child- and pet-safe areas, where there is evidence of activity 

• Limit hand contact with baits; check and replace them daily 

• Place sachet bait contents into shallow dishes or containers 

• Ensure baits in roof cavities are close to the manhole for regular checks 

• Eliminate potential food or water sources; use baits protected from moisture or rain.
