Waterwise Verge Garden Competition

In tribute to Biodiversity Month, the City of Cockburn invites entries to the inaugural Waterwise Verge Garden Competition 2024.

There are some absolutely beautiful verge gardens in our city and we want to reward you for your efforts.

There’s great prizes to be won in three categories by simply submitting images of your gorgeous waterwise verge garden!

Categories:

  1. Most Waterwise Verge Garden 1 
  2. Most Biodiverse Verge Garden 2
  3. Waterwise Verge Rebate Recipients–from 2017-2024

Prizes

The judges will award prizes in each of the three categories as follows: 
Winner: $250 garden voucher
Runner up: $150 garden voucher

Terms and conditions

1. Entry to the competition is free and open to the residents of the City of Cockburn over 18 years. Staff and Elected Members and their households are ineligible from entering this competition.
2. The judges will assess all valid entries based on the competition criteria, and compliance with these terms and conditions.
3. Entry to the competition opens 10am Sunday 1 September and closes 5pm Friday 1 November 2024.
4. The City will announce the winners by Friday 15 November. Winners will be notified by email or phone, as provided on their entry form.
 

A valid entry:

  • A residential verge is the garden area between the road and the boundary to the residential property
  • Must comply with the City’s Verge Improvement Guidelines
  • Must be in regards to a verge located within the City of Cockburn and be the verge of the applicants residence
  • Must include three photographs of the waterwise verge garden that is the entry and no people in the photographs
  • Must be submitted online or via a hard copy to the Administrative Building, 2 Coleville Crescent Spearwood
  • Verge gardens will be judged on how well they demonstrate waterwise or biodiversity values
  • Please note your garden will only be viewed in person if selected as a finalist
  • One verge can only win in one category
  • The City may use the entrants first name, suburb and photographs, for public promotional purposes. The address and surname will be kept private.
  • The City may take photographs of the finalists of their verge gardens to use for promotional purposes
  • The prize winners and runners up will be notified via phone and can claim their voucher from the City of Cockburn Administration Centre, 2 Coleville Crescent Spearwood.

1 Waterwise means that the verge garden is designed to minimise water use, be low maintenance with predominant use of WA native waterwise plants and those listed on the Water Corporation online waterwise plant directory.
 
2Biodiverse means that the verge garden is designed to focus on local and WA native species. This will increase plant diversity in the local area, providing habitat and food that supports the increase in native animas such as birds, invertebrates, and reptiles.
