Fieldey street mural to brighten Spearwood Avenue

20APRIL2023
Main points:
  • Internationally recognised street artist Fieldey will paint a 250m mural on the Spearwood Avenue noise wall
  • Fieldey’s floral design, inspired by flower farms once common in the area, will help prevent graffiti and vandalism
  • The artist and her design was chosen by Yangebup residents.
Internationally recognised Perth street artist Fieldey has been chosen to create a colourful mural for the 250m noise wall on the western side of Spearwood Avenue in Yangebup.

Apart from the artist’s surf and skate art, murals and commercial commissions, Fieldey, or Haylee Fieldes, is also sought after for her illustrations of flora.

Colourful blooms inspired by local flower farms of bygone years, and the Yanget reed after which the suburb of Yangebup is named, will be a feature of the massive mural.

The $80,000 City project is designed to prevent the wall from graffiti vandalism which has attracted concern from the local community about its negative appearance.

City of Cockburn Art and Culture Coordinator Cassandra Cooper said the mural would go a long way to brightening the high traffic area along the four lanes of Spearwood Avenue.

“Spearwood Avenue is a major regional connector road from the Bibra Lake commercial area and residential suburb of Yangebup between Rockingham Road and Beeliar Drive,” Ms Cooper said.

“The new artwork will be enjoyed by thousands every day, on their way to and from home, work and school including motorists travelling on the road and pedestrians using the shared pathway.”

Ms Cooper said the wall’s 86 panels would take several weeks to complete, with undercoat application beginning in late April, followed soon after by the design being drawn on. Painting will start during May with passers-by able to see its colourful progression.

In response to complaints about ongoing vandalism of the wall, the City of Cockburn advertised for mural artists to submit a concept for the project.

The City received nine responses and these were shortlisted to five by Yangebup Progress Association.

The Yangebup community then voted on the list and 126 people voted for Fieldey to undertake the project.

Fieldey then held a community workshop to gain inspiration for her designs with two final concepts going to a vote.
