Bushfire Mitigation

What the City does

Firebreak maintenance in City reserves

Firebreaks in our City reserves are an important fire management consideration. We use crushed limestone on selected firebreaks to reduce maintenance costs and community use, reduce the spread of diseases like dieback, and — most importantly — provide easy access for emergency services personnel.

Firebreak maintenance in City reserves starts in October each year so they’re ready for fire season.

Contact us for any feedback or queries about the firebreaks in our reserves.

Property inspections

From 1 November to 15 April each year, our Fire Control Officers conduct inspections of private properties to ensure they are compliant with the City’s Fire Control Order.

Bushfire mitigation and ensuring your properties are compliant plays a crucial role in reducing the overall risk to the community.

If you would like to report a property that you think is non-compliant, please call 9411 3444 or email us between 1 November and 15 April. Properties are not required to be compliant outside of these times.

If the property is owned or managed by the State Government, please contact the relevant department.

Weed control on verges

The City trims weeds, small trees, and other foliage as part of its maintenance to industrial verges across the City.

Rural verge mowing is up to four services a year, Priority 1 verge mowing is up to six services a year, Priority 2 verge mowing is up to four services a year, and Industrial and Commercial verge mowing is up to four services a year and now includes brush cutting.

Unkempt verge mowing services will move from an ad hoc service to a scheduled service up to four times a year.

Landowner Biodiversity Conservation Grants

The Landowner Biodiversity Conservation Grants program provides financial support to City of Cockburn residents living in the rural, rural living and resource zones, who want to conserve and enhance the natural bushland and wetland areas on their property.

Visit the grants page on our website for more information.

What residents can do

Asset Protection Zones

An Asset Protection Zone (APZ) is a low-fuel area immediately surrounding a building. It should include a defendable space adjacent to the building, have minimal vegetation, and remain free from combustible items and obstructions.

If correctly designed and maintained, APZ’s can increase the likelihood that your building can be defended during a bushfire, and that it may endure if left undefended. Read more in the Guidelines for planning in bushfire prone areas booklet.
