Breakwater Maintenance works in Port Coogee

The City of Cockburn is undertaking scheduled maintenance on key coastal structures at Port Coogee Marina and Catherine Point Groyne to ensure they continue to protect local infrastructure and our coastline from storm and wave damage.

Why the works are needed
The breakwaters and groynes play a critical role in coastal protection. Over time, storm events cause the large rock armour and limestone core to shift or erode. This reduces the effectiveness of these structures.

Regular maintenance every 5–8 years is essential to:
  • Maintain structural integrity
  • Protect nearby homes, public spaces and marina infrastructure
  • Prevent more costly repairs in future
The last major works were completed in 2017.

What the works involve
The project includes:
  • Repositioning and adding large rock armour
  • Replacing compacted limestone within the structure
  • Restoring any disturbed landscaping at the end of works
Schedule and locations
  • Southern Breakwater: 30 April – 12 June
  • Northern Breakwater: Early June – Late July
  • Catherine Point Groyne: Early August – Late August
Please note dates may be subject to change due to weather.

Impacts for the community
  • Temporary fencing and signage at work locations
  • Footpath closures near work areas (e.g. Socrates Parade)
  • Rock storage on a grassed section of Omeo Park and Chelydra Park (to be reinstated after works)
  • Four parking bays, including two ACROD bays, will be closed at the end of Chelydra Point.
  • Minor noise and activity during work hours
A Traffic Management Plan will be in place throughout the project to ensure public safety and maintain access wherever possible.
