The City’s Habitat for Homes program encourages its residents to create habitats in their homes by growing native gardens and having bird baths for native animals to find shelter and food. Cockburn residents can receive a 50% rebate (up to $50) towards the cost of a bird bath.
You can apply year-round.
To apply, complete the online application form below.
Bird Bath Rebate Application Form
- A completed form, proof of address and proof of purchase must be provided
- There is a limit of one rebate per household. The rebate applies to only one bird bath per household, regardless of how many are purchased in a single transaction. The rebate covers 50% of the cost, up to $50, for the most expensive bird bath in your purchase.
- The rebate is only valid for expenses incurred within the current financial year.
- Applicants cannot resubmit previously approved receipts and/or invoices.
- Rebates will be processed within eight weeks and are paid at the end of the month.
Choosing a bird bath
Bird baths should be:
- Chest height making them less reachable to cats and dogs
- Around 6cm deep to help native birds drink and wash
- Lightweight, as they are easier to clean and move.
Where to locate your bird bath
Bird baths should be:
- Located on your private property (e.g. not on the verge)
- In sheltered areas (e.g. under a tree) to keep cool
- Close to or connected to existing reticulation, to save on water.
Maintaining your bird bath
- Safety: Place a stick or rock in your bird bath to give visiting insects a chance to climb out.
- Hygiene: Bathing birds can potentially put diseases in the water. There are records of various avian flus spreading from unhygienic bird baths. Cleaning (with a soft brush) and regularly changing the bath water will help eliminate the spread of disease.
- Regularly-filling bird baths: Bathing birds often splash most of the water out. Regularly filling bird baths once or twice a day is often needed, especially during summer.
