Australian Fairy Terns (Sternula nereis nereis) are a migratory shorebird that can be found along coastal beaches and near-coastal wetlands in south-western Australia. Fairy Terns are listed as ‘vulnerable’ in Western Australia under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (2016).
Fairy Terns nest during spring and summer around south-western Australia. Birdlife Australia has recorded long term observations of Fairy Tern roosting and nesting sites at Woodman Point, and this location is ideal for their needs.
Their nest is a scrape in the sand, often covered by small pebbles and shell fragments. The nests may be directly in the shallow sands or sandy patches amongst rocks. Their nesting habitat makes them easily vulnerable to predation and disturbances so their nests require protection.
